IN MEMORY

Joseph Slivinski - Class Of 1968

Joseph A. Slivinski, 71 of Peckville passed away unexpectedly Friday. His wife of 44 years is the former Christine M. Klonoski. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Anthony F. Slivinski and Romayne Kolodjewski. He was a 1968 graduate of the former South Catholic High School before going on to serve in the US Army for two years as a specialist during the Vietnam War. In 1975, Joe and his brother Jack became co-owners of Alton Dress in Dickson City, a family business that went on to become Layton Dress and then J&J Binding. In 1995, Joe translated his expertise with fabric and design into an engineering career with Gentex Corporation in Simpson until his retirement in 2017. He resided in Peckville for the last 38 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Joe was a deeply loving and charismatic husband, father, and friend with a zest for life. He was filled with perpetual optimism, which fueled his talents and passions. In his career as an engineer, his creativity and innovation earned several US Patents for military helmet system designs. His engineering skills carried through to his personal hobbies, including building elaborate model trains. Joe’s passions did not end there; he was an avid billiards player, cyclist, photographer, fisherman, bowler, guitarist, golfer, and more. He was also a doting grandfather to his furry grandchildren, Marvin, Ruby and Fozzie. They will miss the long walks and generous table scraps. Missed most of all will be his joking good nature that filled every room with belly laughs and instant memories. Also surviving are two sons; Matthew and partner Michael Boran, Maplewood, NJ and Jeffrey and wife Kate, Peckville, a brother, Jack Slivinski and wife Marianne, Scranton and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Thursday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville, with mass at 10 AM. Interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
