Thomas J. Cawley, 78, Pittston, sadly passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024, following an extended and hard-fought health battle. He was born and raised in Scranton and resided in Pittston Twp.

He is survived by his loving, caring and supportive wife and best friend, Jean Derovage Cawley. They had been married for 51 years.

Words alone cannot express all the ways people have been touched by his presence in their lives. Tom was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a man whose life always remained centered on family. His life was deeply interwoven in the communities he loved and served.

He was proud of his Irish heritage, he was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Lackawanna County St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, honored to serve as Parade President in 2008. A devout Catholic, Tom was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, where he was a member of the choir and the Holy Name Society, served as a lector and was involved with parish programs and events.

Tom was an avid Phillies fan and took his love of the game to playing in high school and supporting the Pittston Twp. Little League. His interest in movies, theater and music were a constant part of his life.

He graduated from South Scranton Central Catholic High School. He then proudly entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Little Creek, Virginia, and aboard the USS Pocono. Upon discharge, he returned to Scranton and furthered his education at the University of Scranton. Tom worked with his father in the family business since a teenager, and with his brother and sister, continued to grow Cawley Bros. Van Lines through the decades.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by their four children, Karen (Stephen) Magosin, Collegeville; Jason (Lori) Cawley, Jenkins Twp.; Patrick (Jessica) Cawley, Dallas; Thomas (fiancée, Carol Jones), Jenkins Twp.; grandchildren, Sarah and Hannah Magosin; Alexis, Aiden, Norah and Natalie Cawley; Lucas Cawley; siblings, Barbara Cawley, Kathleen Winkler (James), Patricia Joyce (Paul); sister-in-law, Ann Marie Cawley; nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Paul Derovage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar B. and Margaret Granahan Cawley; brother, William Cawley; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Barbara Burke Cawley; maternal grandparents, Patrick and Kate Butler Granahan.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this time. Tom's legacy is one of dedication, love and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed, but the seeds he planted in the hearts of those who knew him will continue to grow and flourish for generations to come.
